Ex. 12

Palm harmonics can add drama to your playing. “The best way to grab an audience is not to get louder but suddenly quieter,” Bob says. He suggests working up quick palm flourishes, such as Ex. 13, and sprinkling them into longer passages.

“The super-advanced version of this, which the greatest Hawaiian guys did so well, is to play harmonics up to—but not including—the top string.” Ex. 14 illustrates the technique. Played as harmonics, lower-string arpeggios become transparent; any top-string melody gets emphasized accordingly. Notice that with palm harmonics the interval in beat three gets inverted, changing from a fifth to a fourth. Once you master this mixed harmonic-and-note trick, you’ll be able to voice chords that are impossible to play using conventional slide technique. It’s worth a good, oh, five years of study.
